Commentators no longer have to be in the building: four flyaway kits with clean feeds, mix-minus and a redundant return path.
Four remote commentary kits join the broadcast inventory this month. Each one is a two-person position with a commentator unit, a clean feed to the studio, mix-minus on the return and a backup connection over a second provider.
Why hardware and not software
A software codec on a laptop is fine until the laptop is the same machine doing the replay. A dedicated unit with its own power, its own network path and physical controls is what a commentator can rely on at 2 a.m. in a different time zone.
Rehearsed, not assumed
Every commentary position is tested end to end with the studio the day before the event, including the failover. The procedure for a dropped return is printed and taped to the desk, because the person who needs it will be wearing headphones and cannot hear you explain it.
