Why every crew brief is written twice

Why every crew brief is written twice

Arabic and English show notes are not a translation exercise — they are two documents written for two crews doing the same job.

On a large build our crew is a mix of Arabic speakers, English speakers and people who work in both. A brief that exists only in English is a brief half the site reads slowly, at the end of a long day. A literal translation is often worse: it keeps the structure of the original and loses the instruction.

Two documents, one meaning

We write the English brief, then write the Arabic one from the schedule rather than from the sentences. Both carry the same times, positions and names, and both are checked by the crew lead who will run the shift.

Cue calls too

Comms calls stay short and bilingual where the room needs it — a stand-by is called in the language the operator thinks in. It sounds small. It is the difference between a changeover taking eight minutes and taking fifteen.
